Appliance Connection in Odemira and the Costa Vicentina

Bought an induction hob, an oven, a washing machine or a water heater and need it connected properly? We do safe connections with the right circuit and the right protection, across Odemira, Vila Nova de Milfontes, Sines and the Costa Vicentina. Including the check most people skip: whether the existing circuit can actually take it.

What We Cover

  • ✅ Induction and ceramic hobs, on a dedicated circuit
  • ✅ Built-in ovens
  • ✅ Washing machines and heat-pump tumble dryers
  • ✅ Water heaters
  • ✅ Extractor hoods and air conditioning
  • ✅ Borehole pumps
  • ✅ Earth continuity verified at the appliance
  • ✅ Several appliances connected on one visit

Why an Induction Hob Does Not Go Where the Old Cooker Was

This is the job we are most often called to put right. The gas cooker or the old electric hob comes out, induction goes in — and it gets connected to the circuit that was already there, because the outlet is the same. It is not: an induction hob draws between 3.5 and 7 kW, several times what was there before.

The result does not show on day one, and that is what makes it dangerous. The cable heats inside the wall for months, the insulation degrades, and the symptom appears as a smell, a discoloured socket, or a breaker that starts tripping for no apparent reason.

An induction hob requires a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, with the right cable size and its own protection, and often a direct connection with no plug. The same applies to a separate oven, a water heater and a heat-pump tumble dryer.

The Water Heater: the Appliance Behind Most Trips

If one appliance is responsible for RCD trips in houses in this area, it is the water heater. The element works inside water and, over the years and with hard water, starts to develop a leakage to earth. The RCD detects it and trips — it is working correctly.

The typical pattern: it starts tripping in the small hours, which is when the heater comes on, and nobody can work out why because at five in the morning nothing is being used. It is a diagnosis of minutes once you know where to look.

In houses on borehole water, which here is most of them, this happens earlier than average. Putting the water heater on its own circuit has a large practical advantage: when the element finally fails, only the heater loses power and not the whole house.

What We Check Before Connecting Anything

The job is not joining two wires. It is confirming that the circuit can take the load, that the protection is appropriate, and that the earth actually reaches the appliance.

That last check is the one that most often fails in older houses. A metal appliance connected without an effective earth is the source of that tingling sensation when you touch it — which is not static, it is current passing through you. And it means the residual current device may not be protecting as it should.

If you are fitting out a kitchen all at once, it is always worth doing every connection on the same visit: the travel and the setting up weigh more in the cost than each individual connection, and in a municipality with these distances that difference is considerable.

How It Works

  1. Step 1: Check of the existing circuit and its protection
  2. Step 2: Confirmation that the earth actually reaches the appliance
  3. Step 3: Dedicated circuit installed where required
  4. Step 4: Connection, testing and check under load
  5. Step 5: Old appliance disconnected and removed

Pricing and Quotes

If there is a suitable circuit, it is quick work. What changes the price is when there is not: then a dedicated circuit is needed from the consumer unit, and the cost depends on distance and route. We look at the visit and give you both options. Connecting several appliances on one visit costs far less than several visits.

Frequently Asked Questions

I bought the hob and the oven. Can I use the existing circuits?

The oven, often yes. The induction hob almost never: it needs a dedicated circuit with the right cable size and protection. We check at the visit and, if there happens to be a suitable circuit already, we tell you and you save the work.

The RCD trips in the middle of the night with nobody using anything.

That is the classic water heater pattern: the element heats at that hour and, if it has a leakage to earth, the RCD trips. You can confirm it by unplugging the heater for one night. If it does not trip again, it is identified.

I feel a tingle when I touch the washing machine. Is that normal?

It is not, and it is not static. It is current passing through you for want of a better path — earth missing, broken, or with high resistance. It also means the RCD may not be protecting as it should. That is something to look at, not to tolerate.

Will you install an appliance bought online?

Yes, wherever it was bought. What we ask is to see the datasheet first, to confirm the load and the connection type — some equipment requires a direct connection with no plug and a dedicated circuit, and that changes the job.

How much does connecting a water heater cost?

If there is a suitable circuit, it is short work. What changes it is when there is not: then a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit is needed, and the cost depends on the distance and the route. We look at the visit and give you both options.

Do you take the old appliance away?

We disconnect and remove what we replace, and leave the connection in good order. Disposal can be arranged with you — many suppliers collect the old unit when delivering the new one, and it is worth confirming that beforehand.

Is it worth connecting several appliances on the same visit?

Considerably. The travel and the setting up weigh more in the cost than each individual connection — connecting four appliances at once costs far less than four visits, particularly with the distances in this municipality.

Do I actually need an electrician to connect a hob or oven?

Induction hobs, ovens, water heaters and tumble dryers need the right circuit and protection. Connecting them to an ordinary socket is the most common cause of tripping and overheated cabling.

What if the existing wiring cannot take the new appliance?

We tell you before connecting anything, with what it would take and what it costs. We would rather do that than leave a circuit running at its limit.

My oven came with a standard plug. Can I just use any socket?

If it came with a plug, it was designed for an ordinary socket — but that does not mean that socket's circuit can take the oven plus whatever else is already on it. In older kitchens on a single circuit, it often cannot. It is a five-minute check.
