EV Charger and Wallbox Installation in Odemira and the Costa Vicentina

We install wallboxes and charging points in houses, holiday lets and businesses in Odemira, Vila Nova de Milfontes, Sines and across the Costa Vicentina. We handle all of it: dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, the protection the installation requires, mounting and configuration — and, where it makes sense, a load balancer so you do not have to increase your contracted power.

What We Cover

  • ✅ Dedicated circuit from the consumer unit
  • ✅ Type A RCD with 6 mA DC detection, or type B
  • ✅ Dynamic load balancing
  • ✅ Charging point in detached garages and annexes
  • ✅ Access control for holiday-let guests
  • ✅ Integration with an existing solar system
  • ✅ Installation of a charger you have already bought
  • ✅ Certification of the interior installation

You Probably Do Not Need to Increase Your Contracted Power

This is the most expensive mistake we see. A house with 6.9 kVA contracted and a 7.4 kW charger cannot charge at full power with the oven on — and the instinctive reaction is to ask the supplier for a power increase, which raises the fixed part of your bill every month of the year, whether you charge or not.

The alternative is a dynamic load balancer: a sensor at the consumer unit measures what the house is drawing at each moment and tells the charger to reduce its power instead of tripping the main breaker. When the house quietens down at night, the charger ramps back up on its own. It costs a fraction of what the power increase would cost you over two years.

And the arithmetic settles it. A typical EV battery holds between 50 and 77 kWh. Even at 3.7 kW — half power — it fills from low to full over a long night, and nobody arrives home at zero. Charging fast at home is almost never the right objective.

What Decides the Price Here: Distance to the Consumer Unit

In a Costa Vicentina property, what moves the price is not the equipment — it is the distance between the consumer unit and where the car is parked. In a flat with the unit by the door it is a few metres. In a house with an annex, a carport or a detached garage, 25 to 40 metres is entirely normal.

That changes the cable size the installation requires. A 7.4 kW circuit at ten metres is fine on 6 mm²; at thirty-five metres, voltage drop pushes it to 10 mm², and sometimes to a trench if the route runs outdoors. That is the difference between a few hundred euros and something over a thousand.

This is why the site visit always comes before the quote, and never over the phone: we measure the real route, see where the cable can run and confirm what the consumer unit can take. Only then is there a number.

The Protection That Is Mandatory, and Why

A charging point is not connected to an existing socket, nor hung off a shared circuit. It requires a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, with its own breaker and an RCD capable of detecting DC residual current — in practice a type A with 6 mA DC detection, or a type B.

The reason is physical, not bureaucratic: the charger converts current, and if there is a fault with a DC component an ordinary type AC device may simply not see it and may not trip. That is precisely the scenario where the protection exists but does not protect.

Charging through an extension lead, or with the emergency cable plugged into an ordinary socket for hours at a time, is the most common cause of burnt sockets we come across in this area. A domestic socket is not designed for 10 A continuously for eight hours, night after night.

Holiday Lets and Solar: the Two Local Cases

In holiday lets — much of the housing stock between Milfontes, Almograve and Zambujeira — a charger has stopped being an extra and become a booking filter: a good number of guests choose accommodation because it offers charging. What matters there is being able to limit the power or the hours, so a guest's car does not spoil the comfort of the house or trip the main breaker mid-dinner.

If you already have or plan to install solar panels, it is worth planning both together: some chargers will preferentially use surplus solar rather than exporting it. The gain is larger here than the national average, because summer production on this coast is high and the surplus is substantial.

We do the interior electrical work and the certification of the installation. See our solar panels page for what falls on our side and what requires an external engineer.

How It Works

  1. Step 1: Site visit: real cable route measured, not estimated
  2. Step 2: Check of what the consumer unit and the supply can take
  3. Step 3: Written quote with the cable route and protection itemised
  4. Step 4: Installation, protection and configuration
  5. Step 5: Test charge with you present

Pricing and Quotes

Installation from €250, depending on the distance to the consumer unit and the protection required. Beyond about 25 metres the cable size goes up and so does the price — which is why we measure the route before quoting and never give a figure over the phone. We can supply the charger or fit one you already own.

Frequently Asked Questions

I live in an isolated house. Can it be installed far from the consumer unit?

Yes, and it is the most common scenario here. What changes is the cable size and how it is routed — surface trunking, buried conduit, or making use of an existing route. Up to around 40 metres it is straightforward; beyond that we assess whether a secondary consumer unit near the garage is the better answer.

Can I use the wallbox to charge guests' cars?

Yes, and in that case it is worth choosing equipment with access control — by card, app or simply with a time restriction. That way charging is not permanently available and does not compete with the house at peak hours.

How long does the installation take?

A typical installation is done in a day. If a trench is needed, or the cable has to run outdoors, or the consumer unit needs rearranging to make space, it can run to two. We give the timescale after the site visit, never before — that is what avoids surprises.

What if I change car? Does the installation still work?

It does. The Type 2 connector is the European standard and it is the same across every brand sold in Portugal. What can change is the power the car will accept, but the installation is sized for the circuit, not for the model.
