First: Is It Your Installation or Is It the Grid?
In an area with overhead lines and long spans, as much of this municipality has, grid failures are frequent — with wind, with storms, with a fallen branch. Before calling anyone, check with a neighbour: if the street or the hamlet is without power, the distribution operator is who resolves it, and an electrician's call-out would be paid for nothing.
If it is only your house, with neighbours on power, then it is the installation. And the first thing to look at is the consumer unit: whether the main breaker tripped, whether the RCD tripped, or whether nothing tripped at all — those three lead to completely different diagnoses.
We go through this on the phone before setting off, because in half the calls the conversation resolves it in five minutes and saves a call-out nobody wanted to pay for.
The Sequence That Identifies the Culprit
If what tripped was the RCD, the cause is a leakage fault, and it is almost always one specific appliance. Unplug everything, reset the RCD, and plug the appliances back in one at a time, waiting a little between each. Whichever trips it again is the culprit.
In houses in this municipality the usual suspects are three: the water heater, whose element works inside water and eventually develops a leak to earth — particularly with borehole water; the borehole pump, permanently exposed to damp; and anything connected outdoors, after rain or irrigation.
That information is worth more than half an hour of diagnosis on site, and it costs nothing. When you call with the culprit already identified, the job becomes repairing rather than searching.
When to Switch Off and Not Switch Back On
There are three situations where the instruction is the same: turn off the main breaker and do not reset it. A burning smell from the consumer unit or a socket. A consumer unit, socket or cable that is hot to the touch. Water in contact with the electrical installation, even if it looks dry now.
A breaker reset onto a fault that is still there is the sequence that turns a fault into a fire. Being without power for a few hours is worth far more than insisting for the sake of convenience.
And if there are visible sparks or a buzzing from the consumer unit, that is the one case where we ask you to call whatever the hour. Everything else waits until the next day at no added risk — and costs considerably less.
Real Distances and Prices Stated Up Front
This is the largest municipality in the country by area, and Odeceixe, Almograve or Zambujeira are not ten minutes away. When we give an arrival time, we give the real one, travel included — we would rather say an hour and keep to it than say twenty minutes and turn up in fifty with somebody counting.
We give the call-out and first-hour figure before setting off. If on site the job turns out to be bigger than it looked, we stop, explain and quote before continuing. Nobody is left with work under way and no idea what it costs.
And in many cases, at one in the morning, the right answer is a safe temporary repair that puts the power back on, with the permanent fix the following day in normal hours. It costs less and it is done better.
How It Works
- Step 1: Phone triage: often it is solved without a call-out
- Step 2: Call-out and first-hour cost given before we leave
- Step 3: On-site diagnosis and immediate safety
- Step 4: If the job is larger, we stop and quote before continuing
- Step 5: Power restored, permanent repair scheduled if appropriate
Pricing and Quotes
Work outside normal hours costs more than the same work at ten on a Tuesday morning, as in any trade. What is not normal is finding out how much only at the end: we give the call-out and first-hour figure on the phone, before setting off. And when the problem can wait until morning, we say so — it costs considerably less.

Frequently Asked Questions
The whole street is without power. Should I call you?
In that case it is the distribution grid and the operator is who resolves it — a call-out from us would be paid without fixing anything. It is worth checking with a neighbour before calling anybody; it is the check that avoids the most pointless call-outs in this area.
We are in a holiday let with guests and the power is out. Will you come at night?
Yes. A let with guests and no power is an emergency by consequence even without immediate risk, particularly in high season when there is no alternative nearby. The priority is getting the essentials working again and leaving the permanent repair for normal hours.
The borehole pump has stopped and we have no water. Is that an emergency?
In a house with no other water source, yes. Worth knowing that it is often not the pump: frequently it is the protection that tripped, the pressure switch or the start capacitor. We will tell you on the phone what you can check before we travel out.
Do you carry materials with you?
We carry what resolves the great majority of emergencies: common breakers and RCDs, accessories, cable and connection materials. For specific equipment it may need ordering, and in that case we leave a safe temporary solution working.
Do you also do planned work, or only emergencies?
Both. Most of the work is planned — installations, consumer units, certification, EV chargers, lighting — and emergencies come on top. If your case can wait, we say so: it costs considerably less in normal hours.
