Gate Automation and Repair in Odemira and the Costa Vicentina
We automate and repair sliding and swing gates across Odemira, Vila Nova de Milfontes, Sines and the Costa Vicentina — including the part that decides whether it lasts ten years or one winter, which is the mechanical condition of the gate and the wind it has to take.
What We Cover

- ✅ Swing gate arms, wind-rated
- ✅ Photocells and mechanical end stops
- ✅ Manual release, explained and tested
- ✅ Backup battery for single-access properties

Sliding or Swing, and Why Wind Decides It Here
On a sliding gate, what sizes the motor is the weight and the condition of the wheels: a heavy gate on worn rollers demands more than the same gate well maintained, and demands more again two years later.
On a swing gate, it is the length of the leaf that decides, because the effort is in the leverage. And here a factor enters that barely counts in a city: wind. On the strip between Milfontes, Almograve and Zambujeira, a wide leaf acts as a sail, and automation sized at the limit lasts one winter.
Which is why we do not quote by phone. A gate that already runs badly by hand will run worse with a motor — the motor does not correct the defect, it amplifies it and eventually burns out.
Salt, Sand and the Maintenance That Makes It Last
Automation rarely fails suddenly — it degrades. And what degrades it is almost never the electronics: it is the mechanics and the environment. On the coastal strip, salt air attacks screws, tracks and enclosures; sand gets into a sliding gate's track and forces the motor into increasing effort.
The maintenance that matters is annual and simple: clean the track, lubricate what needs lubricating, check the rack is tight, clean and realign the photocells, and test the manual release.
That last point is the most forgotten. The release almost always exists, but frequently nobody in the house knows where it is or how to use it — and they find out with the car inside and no power, which in an area with grid outages happens more often than people expect.
The Usual Faults
Stopped responding to the remote: nine times out of ten it is the battery or the receiver having lost its memory after a power cut. Resolved in minutes.
Opens but will not close: the classic symptom of photocells misaligned or dirty — with sand and salt, frequent here. The system believes somebody is in the way and refuses to close; it is working correctly on incorrect information.
Works, then stops for a few minutes: that is the motor's thermal protection operating because of excessive effort. It points to worn wheels, dry hinges or a gate out of square. Replacing the motor without resolving the cause is buying the same problem again.
Power, Autonomy and Guest Access
In an area with relatively frequent grid outages, and in houses where the gate is the only access, a backup battery is worth considering: it keeps a few operations available without mains power and avoids being shut in or out.
In holiday lets another need appears: giving guests access without handing over a remote that never comes back. A receiver with manageable memory lets you delete one remote without reprogramming the others, and there are keypad or phone-based options that avoid handing over equipment at all.
We also integrate with video entry, so the gate can be opened from inside the house. If you are installing or renewing, deciding both together avoids running cable twice.
How It Works
- Step 1: Check that the gate runs well by hand before anything else
- Step 2: Leaf measured and hinges inspected
- Step 3: Quote with the supply route included
- Step 4: Installation, safety devices and adjustment
- Step 5: Manual release demonstrated and practised with you
Pricing and Quotes
We do not quote gate automation over the phone. Measuring the leaf, checking the hinges and confirming the gate runs well by hand is what separates automation that lasts ten years from one that gives trouble the first winter. What most often moves the price is getting power to the gate, not the motor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an old gate be automated, or do I need a new one?
In most cases it can, provided the structure is square and it runs well by hand. A gate that is warped, on worn wheels or with hinges out of square should be repaired first: the motor does not correct the defect, it amplifies it and eventually burns out.
What happens in a power cut? Am I shut in?
No. Every automation has a manual release, and we show where it is and how to use it at handover. For single-access properties, and in this area with its outages, we recommend a backup battery — it keeps a few operations available without mains power.
How do I give guests access without handing over a remote?
With a keypad, or a module that allows opening from a phone, and a receiver with manageable memory so access can be withdrawn individually. It avoids handing over equipment that rarely comes back intact.
Do you repair automation installed by somebody else?
We do. Most faults are photocells, batteries, the receiver or the mechanics of the gate, and are resolved without replacing the automation. We only advise replacement when parts are no longer available or when the unit is undersized for the gate.
How long does installing automation take?
If power already reaches the gate and the mechanics are sound, normally a day. What changes it is getting power there: on an entrance far from the house, the trench and the cable are the larger part of the job.
Do you do periodic maintenance?
We do, and here it pays: salt and sand degrade tracks, contacts and photocells far faster than inland. An annual service — clean, lubricate, align and test the manual release — prevents most of the faults we get called out to.
The gate has stopped working. Is it the motor or the power?
It could be either. We check the power supply, the safety devices, the photocells and the remotes before suggesting you replace the automation unit — often the motor is fine.
Can I open the gate from my phone?
Yes, with a GSM or Wi-Fi module depending on the system. We also fit extra remotes and keypads, which are useful for holiday homes and short-term rentals.
